The smartphone game Pokémon Go has enticed a whole generation of screen-glued children to step outside and discover the world, by adding elements of virtual reality to ordinary streets and parks. This mix of the real and the virtual is called augmented reality. Augmented reality also promises to bring new possibilities for universities to give students a deeper and ultimately more effective learning experience. How can this be done and what are the learning effects and the educational and technical challenges?
