Dutch fixed telephony connections decrease in Q2 2014

Houten, The Netherlands, 08 September 2014 – The Dutch fixed telephony connections decreased by 0.2 percent during the second quarter of 2014 to reach 6.21 million lines at the end of June 2014, according to Telecompaper’s quarterly Dutch Fixed Telephony Market report. The 0.7 percent quarterly growth in consumer VoIP connections to 5.18 million was not enough to off-set the 5.6 percent drop in PSTN/ISDN lines and 2.6 percent decrease in WLR connections.

VoIP growth was led by a growing number of connections over fibre networks, which increased 3.5 percent on a quarterly basis. Cable VoIP saw 0.1 percent quarterly growth, and DSL VoIP lines increased by 0.6 percent during the second quarter.“The fixed telephony market is expected to decrease with a CAGR of -0.8 percent per year over the period 2014-2018,” said Telecompaper senior research analyst and report author Kamiel Albrecht. “Growth in VoIP lines will not be enough to outpace the decrease in PSTN/ISDN and WLR users.”

The report also shows that retail revenues* for the consumer fixed telephony market amounted to EUR 325 million in the second quarter of 2014, growing 0.9 percent during the quarter. For the period 2014-2018, fixed telephony revenues are estimated to decrease by a CAGR of -4.2 percent.

Notes to editors

*The reported retail revenues include access and usage revenues from PSTN/ISDN/CPS/WLR services as well as VoIP services via cable, DSL and FTTH networks. It excludes revenues from unmanaged VoIP services like Skype, as well as installation fees and equipment sales.
