Cable and fibre continued to grow enough to off-set the decline in DSL lines.

Cable is the largest broadband technology with 3.13 million connections, growing with 1.6 percent during the quarter. The number of DSL lines decreased 1.2 percent to 3.007 million and fibre broadband connections grew 4 percent during the quarter to a market share of 9.6 percent.

Telecompaper estimates that retail revenues for the consumer broadband market were stable at EUR 506 million in the first quarter of 2014 and forecasts a CAGR of 2.2 percent for the broadband revenues until 2018.

KPN, including its XS4ALL and Telfort brands, is the largest broadband provider in the Netherlands with a 40.2 percent share of subscribers at the end of March 2014, after losing 0.4 percentage point compared with the previous quarter. Ziggo was number two with a market share of 27.8 percent, and UPC came third with 16.0 percent of broadband subscribers.

“During 2014, broadband connections are expected to grow by 2.1 percent, with cable and fibre offsetting the continuing decrease in DSL”, according to Telecompaper Research Analyst Kamiel Albrecht. “Annual growth is slowing, as over 88.9 percent of households now have broadband, leaving less room for growth.”
