Dutch consumer VoIP connections grow to more than 5 million in Q3 2013

Houten, The Netherlands, 27 November 2013 – Dutch consumer VoIP connections grew by 1.7 percent during the third quarter of 2013 to reach a total 5.05 million on 30 September 2013 according to Telecompaper’s quarterly Dutch Fixed Telephony Market report. The growth in VoIP connections offset the 6.2 percent drop in PSTN/ISDN lines and 0.7 percent decrease in WLR connections to see the consumer fixed telephony market grow by a net 24,000 lines or 0.4 percent during the quarter to a total 6.26 million connections.

VoIP growth was led by a growing number of connections over FTTH/B networks, which increased 7.1 percent on a quarterly basis, as well as 2.1 percent quarterly growth in cable VoIP connections. This offset a small decrease of 0.1 percent in VoIP connections over DSL.

“The fixed telephony market is expected to expand further, with a CAGR of 1.2 percent per year over the period 2013-2017,” said Telecompaper senior research analyst and report author Kamiel Albrecht. “Growth in VoIP lines will continue to outpace the decrease in PSTN/ISDN and WLR users.”

The report also shows that retail revenues* for the consumer fixed telephony market amounted to EUR 334 million in the third quarter of 2013, down by 1.2 percent compared to the second quarter of 2013.

Notes to editors: *The reported retail revenues include access and usage revenues from PSTN/ISDN/CPS/WLR services as well as VoIP services via cable, DSL and FTTH networks. It excludes revenues from unmanaged VoIP services like Skype, as well as installation fees and equipment sales. Due to continuous improvement in our calculations, the numbers in this press release cannot be directly compared with numbers from earlier press releases sent out by Telecompaper on previous studies of the Dutch fixed telephony market.
